The Hong Kong Wetland Park Volunteer Scheme was launched in 2002 by Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. It aims to incorporate and strengthen the work of wetland conservation and promotion of public awareness.
"HKWP Volunteers" are a group of dedicated nature lovers, who are willing to contribute to the society through participating and supporting wetland conservation activities. These activities include volunteer training, habitat conservation work, guided interpretation service at exhibition galleries and wetland reserve, as well as a variety of education events. Volunteers demonstrate concern and devote time to protecting wetlands. They function as an integral part of the HKWP on interpretative service and participate in all aspects of operation in an active way.
To recognise Volunteers' achievements, they will be awarded according to their service hours and performance.

Volunteer Training A series of training sessions are organised for HKWP Volunteers with an aim to equip them adequate knowledge and skills to meet service requirement and quality. The training sessions include basic knowledge on wetlands, guided interpretation in wetland reserve and exhibition galleries, and interpretative skills. Trainings on identification skills on birds, dragonflies, butterflies, amphibians and reptiles, as well as mammals are also organised. All of these build up and professionalise volunteers’ capacity to provide services on wetland conservation.
Guided Interpretation Service at Wetland Park
HKWP Volunteers are trained to become "Eco-tour Guide" to provide guided interpretation and to share interesting stories about wildlife in the wetland reserve and exhibition galleries. They also lead guided tours on seasonal themes, as well as provide interpretation at assigned locations.
A series of training sessions will be organised as a part of the "Eco-tour Guide Scheme". These include lectures, field trips and practical services. After the training sessions, assessments will be conducted to screen qualified eco-tour guides to provide guided interpretation service to the public.
Outdoor Conservation Service HKWP Volunteers support front-line habitat management works. These include removal of exotic species (e.g. removal of Mikania and Spatina sp.), tree planting, weeding, fertilising, rice transplanting and biodiversity survey. Volunteers also support conservation work at other identified wetlands (e.g. beach cleaning at Shum Wan of Lamma Island to maintain a hospitable breeding ground for Green Turtle).
Experienced volunteers will support "Outdoor Conservation Workshops" to help organisations or communities to equip with necessary knowledge on front-line habitat management through hand-on experience. They also design and maintain the "Volunteer Garden" to exchange experience on gardening.
Volunteers support deliver of wetland conservation message through various activities. For example, they teach children to take a closer look at wetland animals through workshops and games, and bring their "masterpieces" back home. Highlights include "Volunteer Origami Station" and "Wetland Animals Badge Workshop" organise at weekends or public holidays.
Wetland Park Eco-tour Guide Scheme About the scheme:
The HKWP Eco-tour Guide Scheme aims to train up volunteers to become HKWP eco-tour guide through a series of training sessions in wetland conservation and ecotourism. Duties of the HKWP Eco-tour Guide:
Provide on-site interpretative services to visitors about exhibits and facilities of the Hong Kong Wetland Park
Run conservation education activities in HKWP or other identified wetlands in Hong Kong
Provide eco-tours guided service on themed topics (e.g. wetland reserve, identification of butterflies, dragonflies and birds)
Requirements:
Any person who meets the following requirements is welcome to join the "HKWP Eco-tour Guide Scheme":
Existing registered volunteers of the year under HKWP Volunteer Scheme
Passion for nature, animals and plants
Strong interest in leading outdoor and indoor activities
Energetic, proactive and has good communication skills
Willing to provide voluntary services in HKWP at Tin Shui Wai, or in other remote countryside area
Form 5 or above with interests or backgrounds in Biology, Geography, History or other related knowledge
Fluent in Cantonese.
Training:
Step 1: Registered HKWP Volunteers will be invited to join a series of training sessions under the "HKWP Eco-tour Guide Scheme". This include interpretation in exhibition galleries and wetland reserves, knowledge on wetland animals and plants, as well as interpretation skills.
Step 2: Volunteers who have completed the training will be required to attend practical sessions of at least 20 hours, followed by an assessment.
Step 3: Volunteers who have passed the assessment will be issued a certificate and become an accedited HKWP eco-tour guide. They will be required to lead at least 5 to 6 guided tours within half-a-year afterwards.
Assessment Methods:
Volunteers participated the "HKWP Eco-tour Guide Scheme" will be assessed throughout the training courses and practical sessions. Assessments will be conducted by HKWP staff and experienced volunteers based on the following criteria:
Accuracy of presentation in practical sessions;
Attitude when guiding eco-tours;
Effectiveness of conveying the wetland conservation message; and,
Accuracy in delivering correct ecotourism concept.
Participants who passed all the assessments will be recommended as an accredited "HKWP Eco-tour Guide". Awards:
"HKWP Eco-tour Guide Certificate" will be issued to volunteers who have completed the training courses and have passed in all assessments. Continuous refreshment training sessions on wetland conservation and tour guide techniques will be offered to these HKWP Eco-tour Guides.
In addition, they will be awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals according to their service hours under the "HKWP Volunteer Scheme". Click here to download the information.
